Giving back

We have been supporting a rough sleeper for over a week now, we have had a risk assessment done with a viewing of shared accommodation, taken him to the dentist as he had a very painful abscess and taken him for a Christmas haircut and helped him out with some new clothes and a new phone. Bless his heart, he was so grateful.

He has spent the day outside his local shop where he sleeps (with the permission of the store manager) and instead of getting anything for himself when people ask if he needs anything, he’s been asking if instead they would kindly purchase something for our food bank.

We had no clue he was doing this until he rang us and asked us to come and see what he’s been doing. He actually had about ten bags of food items for our food bank from all the kind passers by. Not only have you donated to our families but you have truly helped Dominic, we have never seen him so excited and proud of himself – it’s really given him purpose and it is his way of giving back. Our point is not all the guys are takers, which seems to be the common perception. Dominic has the kindest heart and soul we have ever known and we are very grateful to be supporting him.

Getting clients their smile back

At Homeless Street Angels we aim to rebuild lives and provide ongoing support for our clients. One of our proudest achievements is giving many of our clients their smile back. There are a number of reasons for losing their teeth, including bad dental hygiene, drug and alcohol misuse, poor diet and physical abuse from others.

During lockdown we had several zoom meetings with public Health England and a couple of dental practices in Leeds along with St Georges Crypt. My very own dentist, High Ash dental practice, got onboard and we discussed the possibility of getting our homeless and most vulnerable clients into treatment. Finally, we were given a year’s trial. After a year, we have proved this initiative to be a brilliant success, and it has now been fully commissioned.

We have now been running this amazing service for our clients for over two years. We collect and take three clients every Wednesday to their appointments and support them whilst they are there. We have given the smiles back to many many people who thought they would never smile again, and given them the confidence to go into the next chapter of their lives.

Ryan Jones – Rebuilding a Better Life

We met Ryan Jones over a year ago on the street who had been sleeping rough for 4 years and would never ask anyone for help. Creating a bond and trust with Ryan, we were able to help get him off the street and into a place to live and provide ongoing support and food parcels every week. One year on, Ryan has turned his life around and now has a job with Skopes and also hopes to go to university to study Psychology.
